THE JUDY WATTS SWIM SCHOOL / FACILITY

Judy Watts Swim School was founded in 1977 and is family owned and operated. We have a saltwater pool and a dual oxygen and ultraviolet filtration system which is gentle on babies’ skin and those with skin conditions such as eczema. The water is heated to bath temperature at about 34 degrees and we use tungsten heating around the pool to help regulate baby’s internal temperature. The pool is covered with UV mesh which provides 98% UV protection. We have heated changerooms and an outdoor shower.

THE PROGRAM

We take a holistic approach to teaching infants and ensure our programs are age appropriate and based on developmentally advantageous skills.  We believe in teaching every child what they are capable of learning,  and our classes are based on the individual needs of our students. As a developmental school, we focus on muscle development, strength and skills that cannot be developed on land at such an early age.

Our Aqua Movement™ program is based in warm water and designed for babies from 0 to 2 years. We commence lessons between 6 – 8 weeks of age with the aim of creating a healthy and happy affinity in an aquatic environment. From the very first lessons we also begin our safety program Parenting4Pools™,  which focuses on behaviours in and around the pool.

ABOUT JUDY

When Judy started her infant teaching journey, there was little to no resources available on teaching children under the age of five.  During the 1970s, 1980s and well into the 1990s,  drowning killed, on average,  more children under five than motor vehicles.

Judy strongly believed that children could be taught not to go in the pool the same way they are taught not to go near the stove.  In 1980 Judy become a mother and then the experiments really began.  Pool fencing did not become compulsory until the early 1990s. For the first 20 years of teaching,  Judy focused on her out of water program as she did on teaching the children in water skills.

Judy has been a leading force internationally in the design and implementation of Pool Safety Programs and her safety program was awarded the Swim Australia Outstanding achievement award for her cool pool rules program in 2000.

In the late 1990s Judy released Infants and Toddlers Explore Water which became the national teaching video for Austswim teachers. Since then Judy has released eight DVD’s and two books.  She has also lectured in Australia, Scandinavia, United Kingdom, Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, South America, USA, New Zealand, Singapore and China.

Along with her focus on safety, Judy’s speciality area is the development of infants from birth to 12 months. In 2005, after many years of research,  Judy released her trademarked Warm Water Program –Aqua Movement™

Judy has continued to research and develop her programs with the help of her three children who also work in the business.
